Riviera Farms was established in 1975 by Knute Qvale, a visionary entrepreneur whose legacy spans both agriculture and the automotive industry. Originally created as a haven for his thoroughbred horses and grain crops, Riviera Farms reflects Knute’s enduring commitment to purpose-driven work and stewardship of the land.
Born in Trondheim, Norway, Knute immigrated to Seattle as a child and began his career in the shipping industry before transitioning to automotive sales—a move that would define much of his professional life. Alongside his brother Kjell, Knute co-founded Riviera Motors, an independent distributorship that played a pivotal role in introducing Volkswagen and Porsche vehicles to the Northwestern United States. By 1954, Riviera Motors accounted for a significant portion of VW sales nationwide, cementing Knute’s reputation as a pioneering force in the industry.
About Knute Qvale, Founder of Riviera Farms

A true innovator, Knute helped usher in the era of the VW Beetle in America, shaping the transportation landscape for generations. Despite his professional success, he remained grounded in family and nature—raising horses and cultivating grain crops in the Borrego Valley with the same determination that defined his business ventures.
Alongside his wife, Gloria Qvale, Knute also contributed to the cultural fabric of Borrego Springs. The couple built the original town theater and bowling alley—now hidden beneath the floor of Center Market—creating a space where the community could gather, connect, and unwind.
Knute Qvale passed away in 2010 at the age of 87 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He is remembered not only for his pioneering role in the automotive world, but also for leaving a lasting imprint on Borrego Springs through his work, vision, and the founding of Riviera Farms.
